End of a Great Chapter. On to the Next!

After researching, creating, discussing and reflecting on various topics, I gained valuable insights from this module. Now, I truly appreciate the challenges as well as opportunities associated with it. To bid this module farewell, here’s a Final Reflection to bring you through my learning journey and the development of my digital profiles.

Although I proclaimed myself as a ‘Digital Resident’, my online activities are limited to very few platforms. This module introduced me to other platforms that I could leverage on to perform a wider range of activities. Before this module, I have a low social presence because I only used social media to post snapshots of my life and read content posted by people I follow.

This module improved my Digital Literacy and exposed me to greater functions that I can use on many platforms to strengthen my social currency.

The Development of My Digital Profiles Starts Here!

Blogging

Looking back at Topic 1, I realized that I wrote my post like a formal report, rather than a discussion! Most of the visuals used were not self-produced and referenced to the original source.

With the help of my course mates, I learned several free digital tools which I could leverage on to produce creative visuals that added value to my subsequent posts. These digital tools are mainly Piktochart, Canva, Powtoon and Biteable! As you notice from the infographic below, it clearly shows how improvements in my digital literacies have led to a better usage of visuals and references in my blog post!

Linkedin

Last year, I created my Linkedin profile and left it untouched while hoping for employers to approach me. What a wrong mindset! This module taught me to go beyond simply creating multiple online identities and the importance of developing my professional profiles.

Who knows I may be scouted from this platform for any available job openings?

Twitter

Twitter has always been for tweeting about my daily life. My personal account consists of tweets from my friends, news agencies, and sports updates.

Prior to this module, I kept both of my Facebook and Instagram accounts in ‘Public Mode’ whereby anyone can read the content that I post as well as the content that my friends tag me in. I used to believe that this is a sensible thing to do because I have nothing to hide from anyone and I love sharing my interests with everybody. Now, I put them into ‘Private Mode’.

In Summary, How Have My Digital Profiles Developed After MANG2049?

I drew a clear line between my professional and personal accounts, both serving different purposes. My professional identity can be found on Linkedin, Twitter, and WordPress while personal identity can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

My personal accounts remain as a place for me to share my thoughts and update my daily life! As this module taught me about the risk of identity theft and the number of recruiters screening candidates’ social profiles before hiring, I cleaned up inappropriate content on my timelines and put the accounts into ‘Private Mode’. This helps to maintain my privacy from future employers/partners and to reduce the risk of being a victim to cybercrimes!

After putting my professional accounts through a revamp, I use these accounts daily to connect with professionals and organizations in industries of my interests (E.g. Digital Marketing). With skills learned from interacting with my peers in our blog posts, I started participating in online communities and conversing with people beyond the module. Be it sharing of views on the same topic or giving a simple compliment to writers, I believe that these efforts go a long way into building a broader network, and increasing job opportunities.

These accounts are now integrated with URLs inserted across one another, this helps future employers/partners to obtain an overview of my professional identity.

Regardless professional or personal, I try to keep my details consistent across all platforms. Details like profile picture and Bio are kept similar across the platforms to stay authentic to future employers, partners or even friends!

Drawing Upon More Digital Platforms in Future

As I expand my online professional presence through different platforms, About.me is an excellent platform to centralize my professional identity so that people can easily learn more about my skills. With About.me, I can present my skills and experience in a professional way. This creates more work opportunities as having a centralized professional platform helps to attract new clients or grow my audience.

  1. Absolutely LOVE your self-produced video. And it was inspired to include the transcript – for a variety of reasons, sometimes to do with digital inequality, not everyone can view videos. Well done!
